Authentic Cajun Food & Home Cooking in Port Barre
Everything here is cooked to order at Kings on US Hwy 190. Our kitchen runs 24 hours a day, so whether you pull in for a hot breakfast at 7am or a late-night plate at 2am, the grill is always on.
For nearly 70 years, we've fed truckers, commuters, and Port Barre families with a menu that still reads like true home cooking. Our seafood gumbo comes by the cup or the bowl, the crawfish étouffée goes right over rice, our pork chops come smothered, and our half-pound burgers carry names worth asking about. With fresh sides made right in the kitchen, and most plates coming with your pick of two, you'll always leave full. From signature seafood and authentic po'boys to pizza and big salads, there is something here for every craving.

Cajun Cooking Between Opelousas and the Atchafalaya
Kings sits on US Hwy 190 in Port Barre, about ten minutes east of Opelousas and a short run west of Krotz Springs and the Atchafalaya basin. Drivers running 190 between Baton Rouge and Opelousas have used it as the meal stop on that stretch for close to seventy years. There is no need to get off the highway to find it.
The regulars come from closer in. Families from Port Barre, Leonville, and Melville eat here on weeknights. Crews out of Opelousas and Washington stop for breakfast before a shift. Weekend traffic headed to the Atchafalaya pulls in for a bowl of gumbo on the way home. The menu is the same for everybody, and the kitchen never closes.

Menu Questions
What goes into the seafood gumbo, and how is it served?
A dark roux cooked slow, the onion, bell pepper, and celery base, then seafood simmered in and served over rice. It comes by the cup ($9.99) or the bowl ($17.89). There is also a chicken, sausage, and tasso gumbo for anyone who wants it without seafood. We wrote up how we make it on the blog.
Do the plates come with sides?
Most main entrees and seafood dinners come with two sides, and the sandwiches, burgers, and po'boys come with fries. Sides are made in the kitchen: french fries, green beans, mashed potatoes, onion rings, steamed vegetables, hushpuppies, corn, and side salad. Extra sides are $3.50 ea. each.
Can I order breakfast in the afternoon or at night?
Yes, every hour of the day. Egg plates, omelettes, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, and the Truckers Breakfast ($14.79) are all served 24 hours. Plenty of drivers eat breakfast at 9pm here.
What do people order most?
Red Beans and Rice, Seafood Gumbo, and Seafood Platter lead the list, with the Truckers Breakfast and the Shrimp Po'Boy close behind. If it is your first time, one of those is a safe bet. Not sure what to get? The FAQ covers portions, to-go, and call-ahead orders.
